LD has approximately 400 students mainly
from local primary, middle and high schools and some
adults from the community in the Chutung area.
The main purpose of the LD is to provide
opportunities for elementary and secondary school
students to receive additional English language
instruction, apart from their regular school, in the
afternoon and evening. Students are grouped by age and
ability; in general, class size ranges between 5
students and 20 students.

Most classes offered are for beginners
and intermediate level students. While one aim is to
help prepare students for high school, university
entrance or TOFEL exams, another goal is to develop
students’ communicative skills in English. There are
also adult and pre-school classes for which the main
goal is to develop their English conversational skills.

The classroom instruction hours
are usually 25 hours per week, plus one or two
one-on-one tutorial students. Any extra hours will be
paid additionally. When the weekly teaching hours are
fewer than the above mentioned, teachers still get full
pay. Besides the teaching hours of classroom
instruction, teachers should expect to spend an
additional 15 hours per week at school working on
preparation and marking, developing resources and
materials, attending meetings, taking part in
field-trips, etc. Currently, the regular working hours
are 1:00 to 9:30, Monday to Friday and teachers can take
a lunch break during these hours. Teachers are required
to attend extra-curriculum activities which are usually
held two or three times a year.

Each teacher may
expect to take a specific title, e.g., newsletter
coordinator, curriculum-development coordinator,
testing-development coordinator or material-development
coordinator, to assist the school in developing a
conducive learning system for students.
